GE has
announced it is planning to build a $100 million factory in upstate New
York that will produce sodium-based batteries to power hybrid
locomotives. The batteries could also be used to store energy from
intermittent sources like wind turbines and provide backup power to
data centers.
Schott Solar has opened a solar panel and solar concentrator manufacturing plant in Albuquerque, NM. Long term plans call for spending $500 million on building expansion and the hiring of up to 1,500 more employees.
$786.5 million in stimulus funding
from the U.S.Department of Energy is being made available to advanced
biofuel development. Of the $786.5 million, $480 million is going to
pilot and demonstration scale refineries, $176.5 million for commercial-scale refineries, and $130
million for research.
$25 million in stinulus money is also going to Massachusetts to develop the states Wind Technology Testing Center.
