Consider these statistics: China is the number one global producer of
photovoltaic (PV) cells used in solar panels. The Chinese government
has a $3 billion stimulus plan for solar. 50% of the cost of large
(>500 megawatt) solar installations will be funded by the Chinese
government. China is second in the world in megawatts generated by wind
turbines, with a plan to become number one by 2020. By 2030 it is
expected that there will be 295 million cars in China, by 2012 China
would like to have 60,000 electric vehicles on the road.
Fixing global warming will definitely have to
include China.
The Department of Interior has approved a 130 turbine wind farm off
the coast of Cape Cod in Nantucket Sound dubbed
Cape Wind. The
Federal review of the wind farm has lasted nine years. Residents of the
area are expected to
challenge the ruling in court.
The long awaited
Senate climate change bill may be coming up for a
vote
sometime soon. The House has already passed its own version in June of
2009. There is no clear indication
how this bill will impact the
green economy or green careers, but it will influence a number of key
green industries. Stay tuned.
