Even if you don't know her by name, I'm sure you heard about Diana Nyad this week. Here's the first line of the CBS News story about her recent achievement:
"(CBS News) Diana Nyad has dreamed of swimming
from Cuba to Florida for three-and-a-half-decades,
and finally, on her fifth attempt,
the 64-year-old completed the 110-mile swim."
As I read about her success, I realized how valuable her life philosophy is for those striving to change careers. Take a look at three statements of advice she offered as she made landfall.
Upon reaching land after being in the water 53 hours, Diana Nyad had achieved a dream she's held for more than 35 years.
Exhausted as she was, she shared three thoughts, each one valuable to anyone making a career transition.
"One is we should never, ever give up."
Diana's first attempted to swim from Cuba to Florida in 1978. She was in her late 20's at the time. (Just to give you perspective...what were you doing in 1978? 35 years is a long time to hold and pursue a dream!!)
Her next three attempts took place within the last couple of years.
Throughout this last attempt, she said her mantra was "Find a Way." No matter what happened during her 53 hours in the water - and if you've read any of the accounts of her swim you'll know it wasn't a walk in the park! --she kept her focus on finding a way forward. No matter what it took, she was going to achieve her dream.
This map shows the furthest point she'd reached on previous attempts! Just over 63 miles...and she had just over 47 miles left to go!
Your Career Transition - I believe it's safe to say that transitioning to a new career will have its ups and downs, but none of the low points will be as hard as what Diana went through on her 53 hour swim!
And yet, there will be moment when you will question your sanity! You'll wonder if you can really pull off your dream. It's in those moments that you want to reach back in your memory and pull out Diana's mantra - Find a Way.
